Day 143 – Psalm 53

“Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge…” Psalm 53:4a

CALLING A SPADE A SPADE

How would one call people who deny God and prefer to do evil? The psalmist David chose to call a spade a spade. Bluntly he describes them in the following text.

“Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge,
Who eat up my people as they eat bread,
And do not call upon God?”
Psalm 53:4

1. “Workers of iniquity”

a) This might not be the nicest phrase to employ.
b) But those who engage in wicked works are rightly called “workers of iniquity”.

2. Why are they called such?

a) They eat up people as they eat bread.
i) This is not to be taken in a wooden literal manner (cannibalism is not in mind here).
ii) It describes the way in which the wicked victimizes the weak.
iii) They think nothing of consuming the weak as if they were bread.
b) They have no knowledge.
i) The idea here is that the wicked display no regard for their victims.
ii) There is no sense of “brotherhood of mankind”.
iii) There is no moral conscience when they hurt and take advantage of the weak.
c) And do not call upon God.
i) There is no reference to God.
ii) There is no regard for God.
