Day 137 – Psalm 52

“But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God…” Psalm 52:8

A BEAUTIFUL CONTRASTING PICTURE

David determined in his heart that he would never choose the path of evil. No matter how much he may have to suffer in life, he would rather choose the way of God.

“But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God;
I trust in the mercy of God forever and ever.”
Psalm 52:8

1. Trees planted in the house of God

a) The phrase “House of God” is to be understood in a wider context.
i) It could be used to make reference to the actual tabernacle/temple.
ii) It could also be used to include the compound where the Tabernacle is situated.
b) A significant cross-reference (Psalm 92:12-13)
i) The palm and cedar trees are mentioned in particular.
ii) These stately trees were planted in the compound of the Tabernacle to enhance the beauty of the surroundings.

2. I am like a green olive tree in the house of God

a) David adds one more imagery- “an olive tree”.
b) He compares his life to a young olive tree.
i) Innocent and young
ii) Potential for great future growth

3. I trust in the mercy of God forever and ever

a) David chose to exercise faith in God and His mercy.
b) He would rather trust in God’s mercy always than to resort to wickedness at any time.
