“The Mighty One, God the LORD…” Psalm 50:1

SUPERSCRIPTION: A PSALM OF ASAPH

We are introduced to a new psalmist in Psalm 50. The author is simply identified as “Asaph”.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

It always helps when we have some historical background of the author. Here are some instructive facts about Asaph.

1. Tribe:

Asaph came from the tribe of Levi (1 Chronicles 6:1, 39-43)

2. Appointment by King David

a) Separated from the other Levites for special service (1 Chronicles 25:1).
b) He was associated with notables like Heman and Jeduthun (1 Chronicles 25:1).
c) They were associated with the Music Ministry established by David (1 Chronicles 25:1).
i) Instrumental music {Harps, stringed instruments and cymbals}(1 Chronicles 25:1)
ii) They were also associated with the production of suitable psalms for meditation and worship (e.g. Psalm 50 by Asaph).
iii) They were recognized as “skilled men”.
d) They were also associated with the ministry of Prophecy (1 Chronicles 25:1).
i) They could offer music that helped the prophets to still their hearts and minds.
ii) They could compose prophetic utterances into musical form (Psalms).

3. Area of service: The House of God (1 Chronicles 25:6)

a) In David’s time it was in the Tabernacle.
b) In Solomon’s time it was in the Temple.
c) They were very well organized in their ministry (1 Chronicles 25)
