Day 92 – Psalm 49

“A man who is in honour, yet does not understand…” Psalm 49:20a

THE PRINCIPAL THING

What is the principal thing in life that we would do well to acquire? Ponder this challenge.

“Wisdom is the principal thing;
Therefore get wisdom.
And in all your getting, get understanding.”
Proverbs 4:7

WHEN WE FAIL TO ACQUIRE WISDOM

What if we acquire wealth but not wisdom and understanding? The following text is sobering.

“A man who is in honour, yet does not understand,
Is like the beasts that perish.”
Psalm 49:20

1. “A man who is in honour”

a) He has acquired wealth.
b) He has acquired “glory”.
c) He may thus be also described as a person who is in honour.
i) His family members may give him due honour.
ii) His friends (society) may also give him due regard (honour).

2. “Yet does not understand”

a) He does not understand God.
b) He does not understand the redemption that God offers.
c) He does not understand the value of eternal things.
d) He does not understand that when he dies everything he enjoys perishes with him.

3. “Is like the beasts that perish”

Beasts do not have souls. When they die they go the way of the earth. They just simply expire and they perish, to be remembered no more. Sad is the plight of all who disregard God!
