Day 65 – Psalm 47

“God reigns over the nations…” Psalm 47:8

THE PURPOSE OF THE PSALMS

The Psalms served many purposes. The following may be highlighted:

1. They functioned as prayers.

2. They were also sung as hymns to God.

3. They sometimes had prophetic elements.

4. They were sometimes a special literary device to teach history.

5. Sometimes they were written as powerful theological statements.

GOD AS THE RULER OF ALL NATIONS

God as the Ultimate Ruler of all nations was a powerful theological statement.

“God reigns over the nations;
God sits on His holy throne.”
Psalm 47:8

1. “God reigns over the nations”

a) God’s rule will be disputed by those who reject His rule (Psalm 2:1-2).
b) Time and history will prove that God is indeed the One who reigns over the nations.

2. “God sits on His holy throne”

a) This describes God’s sovereign reign over the earth.
b) This reign is not visible but nonetheless very real.

3. Special theological Messianic references

a) The Messiah is the One whom God would anoint to reign in His name.
b) This is a Messianic prophecy that would one day be fulfilled (Psalm 2:6-8).
c) The nations of the earth would become the special inheritance of the Messiah (Psalm 2:8).
