Day 52 – Psalm 46

“God is our refuge and strength…” Psalm 46:1a

SUPERSCRIPTION

We have another superscription attached to this psalm written by the sons of Korah.

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.
A Song for Alamoth.

Scholars are divided in their opinions as to what “Alamoth” means. It is most likely a technical musical notation by the sons of Korah as to how this psalm (song) was to be sung. The word “alamoth” was actually mentioned when the Ark of the Covenant was brought into Jerusalem by David. The Levitical singers were appointed to sing with great joy on this occasion.

“Then David spoke to the leaders of the Levites
to appoint their brethren to be the singers
accompanied by instruments of music, stringed instruments,
harps and cymbals, by raising the voice with resounding joy.
so the Levites appointed… the singers…
with strings according to Alamoth.”
1 Chronicles 15:16-20

A number of instruments were mentioned. The following may be noted:

1. Cymbals of bronze (1 Chronicles 15:19)

2. Strings according to Alamoth (1 Chronicles 15:20)

3. Harps on the Sheminith (1 Chronicles 15:21)

4. Trumpets (1 Chronicles 15:24)

THEME OF PSALM 46: GOD AS A REFUGE

The theme that the sons of Korah developed was on the subject of God as a Refuge for His people.

“God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.”
Psalm 46:1

1. A Great theme was chosen: God Himself.

2. Three features were highlighted: God as Refuge, Source of Strength, and a wonderful Helper in times of trouble.
