Day 40 – Psalm 45

“Redeem us for Your mercies’ sake…” Psalm 44:26b

AT LAST- A PLEA FOR MERCY

One of the hardest words to utter in life could well be the word “mercy”. Wonderfully the prayer of the sons of Korah ended on a good and solid note. They needed to plead for mercy from God!

“Arise for our help,
And redeem us for Your mercies’ sake.”
Psalm 44:26

1. “Arise”

a) The first time this word “arise” was used
There was a question as to whether God had cast off His people forever (Psalm 44:23b)
b) The second time his word “arise” was used
This was now a plaintive and humbly cry for help (Psalm 44:26a)
i) The nation of Israel could not help itself.
ii) Only God could help!

2. “Redeem us”

a) This was an acknowledgment of the need for redemption.
b) A plea for redemption (salvation) always implies the following:-
i) Admission of guilt
ii) Confession of sin
iii) There could be tacit but implied confession rather than the usual verbal confession of sin.

3. “For Your mercies’ sake”

a) There was now no defiance in the spirit.
b) There was also no attempt to defend self-righteousness.
c) Pleading the mercies of God obliterates any attempt to justify ourselves.
