Day 305 – Psalm 38

“Because of Your anger… because of my sin…” Psalm 38:3

HUMBLE AND HONEST

One of the things that David must be given full credits is the way in which he is honest with himself. There was no attempt to disguise what he was going through.

“For Your arrows pierce me deeply,
And Your hand presses me down.
There is no soundness in my flesh
Because of Your anger,
Nor any health in my bones
Because of my sin.
For my iniquities have gone over my head;
Like a heavy burden they are too heavy to bear for me.
My wounds are foul and festering
Because of my foolishness.”
Psalm 38:2-5

1. “Because of Your anger”

David’s thoughts were first drawn to God.

a) “Arrows”: An imagery to describe God as a Warrior at war with David (Psalm 38:2a).
b) “Your hand”: God’s hand was against David (Psalm 38:2b).

2. Result of this conflict with God

David went on to describe how he felt in this conflict with God.

a) He felt “pressed down” (Psalm 38:2b).
b) There was no soundness in the flesh (Psalm 38:3a).
c) There was no health in the bones (Psalm 38:3b).
d) He felt that his burden was too heavy to bear (Psalm 38:4b).
e) He felt as one deeply wounded in battle (Psalm 38:5a).

3. Confession

David in deep humility admitted that he was totally blameworthy.

a) David admitted his sins.
b) He openly declared his iniquities.
c) He confessed his foolishness.
