Day 282 – Psalm 35

“Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor…” Psalm 35:26b

ANOTHER SERIES OF IMPRECATORY STATEMENTS

David entered another series of imprecatory statements in prayer to the Lord in the following text.

“Let them not say in their hearts, ‘Ah, so we would have it!’
Let them not say, ‘We have swallowed him up.’

Let them be ashamed and brought to mutual confusion
Who rejoice at my hurt;
Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor
Who exalt themselves against me.”
Psalm 35:25-26

1. “Let them not say…”

a) David knew that his enemies would gloat over him if he was defeated.
b) He even knew just how they would exult if they had the upper hand.
c) This plea to the Lord was that through Divine vindication he would not suffer defeat at the hands of his enemies.

2. “Let them be…”

a) Ashamed
b) Confused
c) Clothed with shame
d) Clothed with dishonor

3. If the enemies were to triumph

a) They would rejoice at the expense of David’s hurt.
b) They would just have exalted themselves further.

A REASONABLE PRAYER

The imprecatory prayer of David when studied carefully would be understood as a reasonable petition. How the Lord would answer is quite another matter. Ultimately God’s sovereignty will prevail. His righteous justice would be upheld and vindication would be given to the innocent party!
