Day 180 – Psalm 23

“I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.” Psalm 23:6b

A CHANGE OF IMAGERY

From thinking of the Lord as a Shepherd, the author now switched to an imagery involving a gracious host.

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies,
You anoint my head with oil, my cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life
And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”
Psalm 23:5-6

1. Presence of enemies

a) The presence of “enemies” has been noted in many psalms.
b) It appears again in Psalm 23.

2. Protection from the Lord

a) The Lord offers protection in His House.
b) All who enter into His house would receive full protection from powerful enemies.

3. Provision of the Lord

a) A table is spread for the guest(s).
b) Oil is given to refresh the guest(s).
c) The cup is filled to the brim again and again.

4. Precious Hope

a) With reference to life on earth
i) Goodness
ii) Mercy
b) With reference to life in heaven

There is every reason to believe that this hope of dwelling in the House of the Lord forever is very real indeed! What a precious hope we have in the Lord the moment we have faith in Him as our “Good Shepherd”.
