Day 163 – Psalm 22

“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Psalm 22:1a

MESSIANIC APPLICATION

We may not know the circumstances under which David uttered those words, but we certainly know when Jesus said these words!

“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
Psalm 22:1a
(Matthew 27:46; Mark 15:34)

1. The scene of the Crucifixion at Golgotha

a) Jesus had been nailed to a cross.
b) He had been severely scourged by Roman soldiers just hours before His crucifixion.
c) He was suffering sheer agony physically.
d) But it was not the physical pain that had caused Him to utter these words of anguish!

2. Addressing God

a) Jesus had always addressed God as “Father” (John 5:20; 6:37; 16:16; 17:1).
b) At this juncture Jesus suddenly addressed God formally…”My God”.
c) Why did He make this switch?
i) Jesus was being judged by God for the sins of mankind.
ii) Jesus would be that Lamb of God that would be slain to satisfy the justice of God.
iii) Jesus had to bear the pain and anguish of being separated from His beloved Father. (Even if it was for just three hours… slowly dying on the cross!)

3. Jesus accepted God’s Plan for the redemption of mankind

a) The penalty of sin had to be paid with His death.
b) He would have to bear with the agony of being judged by God for all of the sins of the world.
c) Who knows just how much Jesus had to suffer to bring us salvation?
