"According to my righteousness..."

Day 132 – Psalm 18

“According to my righteousness…” Psalm 18:20b

PERSONAL RIGHTEOUSNESS I

David did not lay claim to moral perfection. However he could say the following words:-

“The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness;
According to the cleanness of my hands
He has recompensed me.
For I have kept the ways of the LORD,
And have not wickedly departed from my God.”
Psalm 18:20-21

1. “Rewarded me according to my righteousness”

a) This is not a reference to salvation.
b) This is a statement of a Divine principle.
c) Righteousness will be rewarded by the Lord.

2. A short list of things that God would consider “righteousness”.

a) “Cleanness of hands”
i) David walked in his integrity.
ii) He was aware that he sought to maintain moral uprightness (Psalm 7:3-5; Psalm 15).
b) “Kept the ways of the Lord”
i) He kept a close walk with the Lord.
ii) He prayed fervently.
iii) He loved the Lord.
iv) He sought to walk in His laws.
c) “Have not wickedly departed from my God”
i) Saul had rejected God’s word and had departed from His ways.
ii) This was a wickedness that David would never contemplate.
