Day 108 – Psalm 16

“They are the excellent ones…” Psalm 16:3b

A HIGH REGARD FOR GOD’S SAINTS

Who are these saints? What are they like? David called them “the excellent ones” (Psalm 16:3). To find the answer we need to appreciate that the Psalms are essentially connected with each other.

CONNECTION TO OTHER PSALMS

One of the better ways to read the Psalms is to understand that the psalms are inextricably linked to each other.

1. Theological linkage

a) Theology of God
b) Theology of trust in the Lord
c) Theology of prayer
d) Theology of hope (in God’s deliverance, for example)

2. Personal linkage

a) The psalms reflect different aspects of the author’s life.
b) They also reflect different stages of growth in his life (difficult to detect though).
i) Chronological age
ii) Spiritual age

3. Development of a Biblical Outlook of life

a) The psalms reflect the growing knowledge of the author.
b) Many lessons of life were learned (sometimes through bitter experiences).
c) The psalmist keeps seeking to learn the lessons intended through his personal experiences.

THE SAINTS WHO ARE ON THE EARTH

There is a close link between Psalm 15 and Psalm 16. The “saints” of God are most suitably described in Psalm 15:2-5. It is little wonder then that David took great delight in knowing them.
