Day 338 – Psalm 135

“Praise the LORD!” Psalm 135:21b

ISRAEL’S OBSESSION WITH IDOLATRY

Israel had a long history of obsession with idolatrous practices. Despite repeated warnings from numerous prophets, the nation continued to spurn their faith in the Lord and chose instead to bow themselves to idols. Psalm 135 resembles Psalm 115:4-8 in the following segment.

“The idols of the nations are silver and gold,
The work of men’s hands.
They have mouths, but they do not speak;
Eyes they have, but they do not see;
They have ears, but they do not hear;
Nor is there any breath in their mouths.
Those who make them are like them;
So is everyone who trusts in them.
Bless the LORD, O house of Israel!
Bless the LORD, O house of Aaron!
Bless the LORD, O house of Levi!
You who fear the LORD, bless the LORD!
Blessed be the LORD out of Zion,
Who dwells in Jerusalem!
Praise the LORD!”
Psalm 135:15-21

1. A solemn realization

a) In vain Israel had worshipped the idols of the Gentile nations.
b) They were not profited in the least!
c) At long last the nation had broken off its ties with idols forever.

2. Blessing of the Lord

a) The whole nation should return to their Covenant-God.
b) Both people and Priests should offer worship to their merciful God faithfully.

3. Praise the Lord

The psalm began with this phrase and appropriately ends on the same note. Praise should be offered out of a heart that has learned to fear the Lord. A deeper level of understanding and faith will enable a person to give praise to God continually.
