Day 337 – Psalm 135

“Your name, O LORD, endures forever…” Psalm 135:13a

A LITANY OF REASONS TO PRAISE GOD

The psalmist waxes eloquent in his desire to encourage worshippers to make it a practice to sing praises to the Name of God. He offers a short list of reasons as to why praise should be given to God.

“Whatever the LORD pleases He does,
In heaven and in earth,
In the seas and in all deep places.
He causes the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth;
He makes lightning for the rain;
He brings the wind out of His treasuries.
He destroyed the firstborn of Egypt,
Both of man and beast.
He sent signs and wonders into the midst of you, O Egypt,
Upon Pharaoh and all his servants.
He defeated many nations and slew mighty kings-
Sihon king of the Amorites, Og king of Bashan,
And all the kingdoms of Canaan-
And gave their land as a heritage,
A heritage to Israel His people.
Your name, O LORD, endures forever,
Your fame, O LORD, throughout all generations.
For the LORD will judge His people,
And He will have compassion on His servants.”
Psalm 135:6-14

1. The greatness of God is to be praised

a) His greatness is seen in nature.
b) His greatness is also seen in mighty deeds He performed for His people, Israel.

2. The goodness of the Lord is to be praised

a) He gave to them the land of Canaan as a perpetual heritage.
b) He conquered many enemies for Israel’s sake.

3. The greatness of God’s name is to be praised

The name and the fame of God are intricately woven together. He will always be there for His people. Even when He has to judge His people He will always exercise compassion on His servants. These are special reasons why God’s name should always be praised!
