Day 255 – Psalm 116

“I love the LORD, because He has heard my voice and my supplications.” Psalm 116:1a

DECLARATION OF LOVE FOR GOD

Psalm 116 is similar to Psalm 18 in one respect. Both psalmists declare openly their love for God.

“I love the LORD, because He has heard my voice
and my supplications.
Because He has inclined His ear to me,
Therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live.”
Psalm 116:1-2

1. “I love the LORD”

a) This was an open declaration of love for God.
b) One reason was cited for this love for the Lord.
i) Because God took time to hear his voice.
ii) This was a reference to God hearing his prayers/supplications.

2. “I will call upon Him as long as I live”

a) The psalmist was emboldened and encouraged in heart.
b) He was determined that he would always call upon Him in prayer.

THE CULTIVATION OF A PRAYER LIFE

The psalmist expressed determination to cultivate his prayer life. There is every reason why we want to emulate his example.

1. Prayer is such a privilege

a) God actually hears our voice when we speak to Him.
b) He will hear and answer our prayers and supplications.
c) This thought alone was enough to motivate him to desire to call upon God always.

2. Praying because of a love for God

a) Prayer ought to be offered out of a heart of love.
b) Praying is not just about making petitions to God.
c) Speaking to God from a heart of love adds a tremendous dimension to prayer.
