This superscription is straightforward! It identifies the author of the psalm as King David.

THEME OF TRUST IN THE LORD

The theme of “Trust in the Lord” is a very prominent one in the Book of Psalms. It is not difficult why this theme is given so much attention.

1. The nature of faith in God requires “trust”.

2. The harsh circumstances of life will demand “trust” too.

3. Waiting on the Lord for His deliverance will certainly entail “trust”.

TRUST IN GOD TESTED

We come to another text that speaks of “trust” in God.

“In the LORD I put my trust;
How can you say to my soul,
‘Flee as a bird to your mountain’?”
Psalm 11:1

1. “In the LORD I put my trust”

a) This is a firm declaration of faith in God.

b) The LORD Himself is the object of David’s faith.

2. “Flee as a bird to your mountain”

a) This was a word spoken to David.

b) The imagery is most interesting.

i) A bird when endangered will take flight.

ii) It will flee to its nest.

iii) It will fly far away… to its “mountain” if needs be to escape.

3. Would this be a suitable response for one who has declared his trust in the Lord?

a) There seems to be some indignation in the retort “How can you say to my soul?”.

b) David decided that he would exercise full trust in the LORD! He would not be as a bird that would take flight because it does not know better!
