INSPIRATION BEHIND THE SINGING OF PRAISES TO GOD

What moved David to determine that he would sing praises to God with such a spirit of determination? What was the possible content of the song of praise that David determined to render to God with a steadfast heart? The following text may give us a clue.

“For Your mercy is great above the heavens,
And Your truth reaches to the clouds.”
Psalm 108:4

1. The theme of “Mercy”

a) Mercy is an essential attribute of God.
b) God’s mercy is described as “great above the heavens”.
c) The heavens are already inestimably higher than the earth.
d) David insists that God’s mercy was so great, it goes beyond the heavens.
e) This mercy David sings about is not an abstract idea.
f) The mercy of God was something David had personally experienced time and again.
g) Having been a recipient of so much mercy, he could not help but desire to praise God for His mercy.

2. The theme of “truth”

a) Truth is a reference to the laws of God.
b) There are a number of terms that have been used by David to describe God’s laws.
c) Psalm 19:7-11 offers a glimpse of this body of “truth” that David appreciates and extols.

3. Different Imagery employed

a) Different imagery was employed to describe God’s “mercy” and “truth”.
b) However, these two attributes of God are not being compared and contrasted.
c) Both of them are to be appreciated individually.
d) Truth is not lesser than mercy!
