Day 196 – Psalm 107

“So He guides them to their desired haven.” Psalm 107:30b

THE MIGHTY HAND OF GOD

How would one feel after having survived a great storm? The bedraggled sailors must have felt great gratitude to see their ship returning safely to the harbour. But is gratitude sufficient response?

“Then they are glad because they are quiet;
So He guides them to their desired haven.
Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!”
Psalm 107:30-31

a) Gladness of heart was felt.
b) The quiet waves after a storm brought a sense of glad relief.
c) But would this be sufficient response?

2. “So He guides them to their desired haven”

a) God continued to guide the sailors.
b) He would protect them and lead them safely back to their desired destination.

3. “Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness”

a) Worshipping God with thanksgiving would be the correct and appropriate response.
b) The goodness of the Lord ought to be most obvious to all who had been delivered from a watery grave.
c) Sacrifices of thanksgiving would be most appropriate.

4. “And for His wonderful works to the children of men”

a) Declaring the works of God with rejoicing would be a great response (Psalm 107:22).
b) God’s deliverance of people from storms ought to produce grateful and joyful worshippers.

AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE

John Newton was one of those who escaped with his life in a great storm. He turned to God in terror and in new-found faith. His escape from death caused him to serve God as a pastor. Till the day he died, John Newton declared with great rejoicing, the wonderful works of God! He exemplifies the spirit of this oft-repeated refrain of giving thanks to God (Psalm 107:8, 15, 21, 31).
