Day 179 – Psalm 107

“Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble…” Psalm 107:6a

TURNING TO GOD IN SHEER DESPERATION

The captives must have been at their wits end. Many were sold as slaves. There were no priests or prophets at hand. The beautiful temple of Solomon had been destroyed. In sheer desperation the children of Israel turned to God.

“Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,
And He delivered them out of their distresses.”
Psalm 107:6

c) Their idols had failed them miserably.
d) They had no other choice but to cry out to their Covenant-LORD in their trouble.
e) But would He respond favourably to them?

2. “And He delivered them out of their distresses”

a) God heard their cries.
b) He took note of their distresses.
i) Physical distress
ii) Emotional distress
iii) Psychological distress
iv) Spiritual distress

3. Why would God hear and answer the prayers of people who had forsaken Him?

a) Because the Lord is good.
b) Because His mercy endures forever.
c) God had promised that if His people should return to Him in humility He would respond favourably to them (Deuteronomy 4:29; 2 Chronicles 7:14).

Israel would discover afresh how good and merciful their God was!
