Day 164 – Psalm 106

“They angered Him also at the waters of strife…” Psalm 106:32

THE RECURRENT WATER ISSUE

The children of Israel kept complaining about water. They felt that it was in short supply on one occasion. Then they complained that the water was bitter. The following text highlights another occasion when the children of Israel complained about water.

“They angered Him also at the waters of strife,
So that it went ill with Moses on account of them;
Because they rebelled against His Spirit,
So that he spoke rashly with his lips.”
Psalm 106:32-33

1. “They angered Him also at the waters of strife”

a) This problem was recorded in Numbers 20.
b) They complained that they had no water to drink (Numbers 20:5).
c) Besides that they also raised up other complaints:-
i) They were complaining that they were in the wilderness (Numbers 20:4).
ii) There were no grain, figs, vines, pomegranates (Numbers 20:5).

2. They were essentially rebelling against the Spirit of God.

3. Moses had heard such complaints virtually every day.

a) It finally got to him.
b) In his frustration he spoke rashly with his mouth and also struck the rock twice.

“Hear now, you rebels!
Must we bring water for you out of this rock?”
Numbers 20:10

i) Moses was to merely speak to the rock and not strike the rock.
ii) The use of the word “we” would seem out of place; it was God and not Moses who would give water to the children of Israel.
iii) Moses was disciplined by the Lord for speaking rashly; he would not enter into the land of Canaan with the children of Israel (Numbers 20:12).
