Day 163 – Psalm 106

“Then Phinehas stood up and intervened…” Psalm 106:30

DEEP AND DARK PLANS

The Moabites had deep and dark plans to overcome what they considered a threat- the children of Israel. They tried a number of things to thwart the movement of the children of Israel into the land of Canaan.

1. They engaged the help of a false prophet called Balaam.

2. They invited the children of Israel to join them in their religious practices.

3. The third thing they did was to promote promiscuity among the children of Israel.

INTERVENTION OF A DIFFERENT KIND

How should one respond to these different devious ploys of an enemy nation? Phinehas, an Aaronic priest decided that enough was enough!

“Then Phinehas stood up and intervened,
And the plague was stopped.
And that was accounted to him for righteousness
To all generations forevermore.”
Psalm 106:30-31

1. Great sorrow (Numbers 25:1-5)

a) Great sorrow swept the camp of the children of Israel.
b) The leaders of the rebels would be sentenced to death by hanging.

2. Flagrant disregard

a) One of the men brought a Moabite woman to the Tabernacle.
b) Obviously there was no regard for the Lord and the plague that had killed so many.

3. “Phinehas stood up and intervened”

a) He took a javelin and killed the man and the Moabitess.
b) The plague was stopped as a result.

4. “That was accounted to him for righteousness to all generations forevermore”

a) Phinehas demonstrated his faith in God and His judgment.
b) His faith was accounted as “righteousness”.
