Day 159 – Psalm 106

“Then they despised the pleasant land…” Psalm 106:24a

SIN UPON SIN

How Moses must have grieved as he witnessed the children of Israel heaping sin after sin upon themselves! The next sin cited was the problem of despising.

“Then they despised the pleasant land;
They did not believe His word.”
Psalm 106:24

1. “They despised the pleasant land”

a) This is a reference to the time when twelve spies were sent to spy out the land of Canaan (Numbers 13-14).
b) Ten of the spies had this to say about the land:-
i) They would not be able to conquer the land because the inhabitants of Canaan were mightier (Numbers 13:31).
ii) The land itself devours its inhabitants (Numbers 13:32).
iii) There were giants in the land (Numbers 13:33).
c) Joshua and Caleb protested this report
i) They declared that Israel would be able to overcome all obstacles (Numbers 13:30).
ii) The land was “an exceedingly good land” (Numbers 14:7).
iii) It was a land flowing with milk and honey (Numbers 14:8).

2. They did not believe His word

a) It was God Himself who said that the land would be “good and large” (Exodus 3:8).
b) It was a land “flowing with milk and honey” (Exodus 3:8).
c) The children of Israel did not believe the words of God.

3. The root of the problem

a) A leanness of soul.
b) A basic problem of unbelief.

Despite all that God had done for the children of Israel, they had not chosen to cultivate their faith in God!
