UNDERSTANDING DIVINE WRATH

Wrath is never easily understood. Human wrath is complex. There are many things that can cause a human being to feel wrathful.

Divine wrath is even more profound. The psalmist reveals an important insight concerning Divine wrath.

“Therefore He said that He would destroy them,
Had not Moses His chosen one stood before Him in the breach,
To turn away His wrath, lest He destroy them.”
Psalm 106:23

1. “Therefore He said that He would destroy them”

a) This text is best understood with Exodus 32-34 in full view.
b) The creation and worship of the golden calf caused great anger.
i) In Moses Exodus 32:19
ii) In God Exodus 32:7-9
c) God threatened to destroy Israel (Exodus 32:10).

2. “Had not Moses His chosen one stood before Him in the breach, to turn away His wrath”

a) Divine wrath
i) This is righteous wrath.
ii) This is holy anger.
b) Divine judgment
i) This was within the Covenant law established with Israel.
ii) This was God’s prerogative.
c) The place of Intercessory prayer
i) It is possible to plead with God to turn away His wrath.
ii) It is possible that God would hear intercessory prayer

Moses was a wonderful example of one who stood in the breached relationship between God and the children of Israel and thus averted disaster for the nation.
