Day 149 – Psalm 106

“Nevertheless He saved them for His nameâ??s sake…” Psalm 106:8a

FOR HIS NAME’S SAKE

Even a casual reading of the Book of Exodus would clearly reveal that the children of Israel did not possess great faith in God. Instead Israel kept rebelling against the Lord. They expressed their frustration and faithlessness by their resistance to the leadership Moses offered. Why then would God save the children of Israel?

“Nevertheless He saved them for His name’s sake,
That He might make His mighty power known.
He rebuked the Red Sea also, and it dried up;
So He led them through the depths,
As through the wilderness.”
Psalm 106:8-9

1. “For His name’s sake”

a) God’s name (reputation) was at stake.
i) That He was the mighty God of the children of Israel.
ii) That He was a God of immense power.
b) He had promised to fulfil:-
i) Promise to Abraham to bring his descendants to the land of Canaan (Genesis 15).
ii) Promise to Moses and the children of Israel (Exodus 3-4).

2. The crossing of the Red Sea (Exodus 14)

a) The Red Sea was “rebuked” by the Lord.
b) The waves parted.
c) The seabed was dried up so that the children of Israel could walk across dry-shod.

3. The sins of the children of Israel

a) They did not heed the Lord in any way.
b) Their sin hindered them from fully appreciating the mighty acts of God.
c) The danger was that this sin of unbelief blinded them so that they were not able to see God leading the nation out of their bondage to Egypt.
