Day 139 – Psalm 105

“He spread a cloud for a covering…” Psalm 105:39a

GOD’S PROTECTION

The psalmist was most conscious of God’s protection over the children of Israel. Throughout all the plagues unleashed on Egypt, God protected His own.

“And in that day I will set apart the land of Goshen,
in which My people dwell…
I will make a difference between My people and your people…”
Exodus 8:22, 23

GOD’S PRESENCE

The protection that God gave to Israel was meant to teach the children of Israel many deep lessons. One of them was that of the Presence of God. He was with His people.

“He spread a cloud for a covering,
And fire to give light in the night.”
Psalm 105:39

1. “He spread a cloud for a covering”

a) God was conscious of how hot it could get in the day time.
b) The wilderness journey would have been that much harder without special protection given.
c) Cloud cover represented a number of things:-
i) Gentle protection
ii) Tender provision

2. “And fire to give light in the night”

a) The column of fire certainly gave welcome light to the children of Israel.
b) But more than light was afforded:-
i) It gave much needed protection.
ii) The Egyptian army that pursued the children of Israel could not get near enough to attack them because of the cloud and the fire (Exodus 14:20).

3. A great spiritual truth

The children of Israel learned an important lesson from this experience. God battled for them.

“The LORD will fight for you…”
Exodus 14:14a
