Psalm 105:23a "Israel also came into Egypt..."

Day 130 – Psalm 105

“Israel also came into Egypt…” Psalm 105:23a

NOTHING UNFAMILIAR

The psalmist was not stating anything that was unfamiliar. The children of Israel were all too familiar with their own history. Nevertheless, he felt that he had to recall old history lessons with the view of encouraging his readers to glory in the Lord.

“Israel also came into Egypt,
And Jacob dwelt in the land of Ham.
He increased His people greatly,
And made them stronger than their enemies.”
Psalm 105:23-24

1. “Israel also came into Egypt”

a) He was invited to dwell in Egypt.
b) The son whom he thought was dead was an important official in Egypt.

2. “Jacob dwelt in the land of Ham”

a) Egypt was also called the land of Ham.
b) Ham had a son called Mizraim (Genesis 10:6).
c) Mizraim is the Hebrew name for Egypt.
d) Some reasons why Ham’s name was mentioned here:-
i) To recall how Ham was cursed by Noah for his rude disregard for his father (Genesis 9:18-27).
ii) Egypt would in time disregard what Joseph had done for Egypt.

3. “He increased His people greatly”

a) There were about 70 people who entered into Egypt (Genesis 46:27).
b) They “grew exceedingly mighty” (Exodus 1:7).

4. “And made them stronger than their enemies”

a) The enemies is a reference to the Egyptians.
b) Israel was nevertheless stronger than their enemies.

No matter what the Egyptians did to destroy them, the children of Israel continued to be strong.
