Psalm 1:1 "Walks... stands... sits..."

BEWARE ROBBERS OF BLESSING

The blessings of God are to be treasured. They are also to be guarded most carefully. Blessings may be lost or forfeited. The many blessings of God poured out on Israel were terribly decimated because of influence of the wicked. Hence this word of admonition.

“Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful.”
Psalm 1:1

THE PRESENCE OF EVIL

The Book of Genesis introduced “the serpent” as the creature that caused the downfall of Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:1). The Book of Revelation identifies “that serpent of old” with the Devil himself (Revelation 12:9).

The minions of Satan are many and their influence is as deadly. Three dangers are highlighted in the above text.

1. The ungodly

2. The sinners

3. The scornful

HOW SHOULD WE RESPOND?

The psalmist was very clear in his mind as to the responses that must be made.

1. Refuse to walk in the counsel of the ungodly

There must be no dalliance with the counsel of the ungodly. Satan was able to make his counsel sound very good to Adam and Eve. But when he tried to offer his “counsel” to Jesus, he was rejected outright (Mathew 4:1-10)

2. Refuse to stand in the path of sinners

There must be no close association with unrepentant sinners! If there is any contact with sinners, it must be with the purpose of bringing them to repentance. To stand in the pathway of sinners is to ultimately learn their ways!

3. Refuse to sit with the scornful

There will always be people who will scorn God and all that He stands for. Those who are scornful often despise those who speak of faith in God. They boast in their intelligence and their successes. Those who sit with them are in danger of ending up with a diminished faith in God.

Let us determine to shun any company that could rob us of our blessings in God!
