Elevated To A Higher Level
Text: John 15: 15
ELEVATED TO A HIGHER LEVEL
There are many “levels” of relationship that we may speak of. Jesus explained how He would elevate our relationship with Him.
“No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.”
John 15:15
1. “No longer do I call you servants”
a. Jesus never did call His Disciples “servants”.
b. The word “call” may be translated as “regard”.
c. He was actually referring to the way His Disciples regarded Him.
i. They addressed Him as “Lord”.
ii. They also addressed Him as “Teacher” or “Rabbi”.
d. Jesus wanted to address this formal way of relating to Him.
e. He does not want them to regard Him in this formal way anymore.
f. He wants them to relate to Him in a very much more deeper level of friendship.
2. “For a servant does not know what his master is doing”
a. A servant has hardly any “rights” in the days of Jesus.
b. He does not know what his “master” or “lord” is doing.
c. The master is also not obliged to tell his servant (slave) what he is doing.
3. “I have called you friends”
a. This was a very high elevation given.
b. The Disciples were now bestowed with a friendship from the Lord Jesus.
c. He would regard them as “friends”.
4. “For all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you”
a. A special feature of friendship is explained here.
b. The Father would communicate many things to Jesus.
c. In turn, Jesus would share what His Father had told Him.
d. Jesus would share deep and wonderful truths with His Disciples as trusted friends.
e. Jesus had always sought to teach His Disciples deep and precious lessons He had learned from God personally.
