Chosen And Appointed
Text: John 15: 16
CHOSEN AND APPOINTED
Jesus wanted His Disciples to be more than mere followers. There were multitudes who followed Jesus for various reasons, mostly personal benefit. He wanted them to understand why they were chosen.
“You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.”
John 15:16
1. “You did not choose Me, but I chose you”
a. It may appear that the Disciples did all the choosing.
i. They chose to follow Jesus.
ii. They chose to be His Disciples.
iii. In a sense, they did exercise choice.
b. Jesus spoke of “choice” in a different perspective.
i. He chose them to be His apostles.
ii. This was something that the Disciples could not do.
iii. Jesus chose them to be His friends.
2. “And appointed you that you should go and bear fruit”
a. Friendship is not the only focus.
b. Bearing fruit is a divine appointment.
c. Being unfruitful is not an option.
d. We are called to bear fruit.
3. “And that your fruit should remain”
a. The word “remain” is the same as the word translated as “abide”.
b. Fruit that remains:
i. This is clearly declared.
ii. Fruit that remains is indicative of the Lord’s blessings.
4. “That whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you”
a. Prayers must be directed to the Father in the name of Jesus.
b. Our challenge is to cultivate our prayer life.
c. Let us ask that we might bear fruit for the Lord.
d. Let us pray that God would help us bear fruit that would truly remain (abide).
