Friendship Extended
Text: John 15: 14-15
FRIENDSHIP EXTENDED
We understand the importance of having friends in life. Next to family, friends are to be treasured. The most valuable friendship is surely the one that Jesus Himself offers!
“You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.”
John 15:14
1. “You are my friends”
a. The word “friend” has its roots in the word “love”.
b. A friend is therefore one who is loved and one who returns that love.
c. What a privilege it is to be called a friend of the Lord Jesus Christ.
d. He has certainly proven His love for us.
e. Jesus had more than lived up to the idea of friendship.
f. He has shown His love when He sacrificed His life through His suffering and death.
2. Truly unworthy to be offered such a friendship
a. Who are we that we should be called “friends”?
b. We have nothing to offer the Lord at all.
c. We are so indebted to the Lord in everything and in every way.
3. “If you do whatever I command you”
a. Jesus defines His concept of being friends with Him.
b. True friends of His are those who will do what He commands.
c. The Person Jesus is:
i. He is the Saviour.
ii. He is Lord.
iii. He is King.
iv. It is our privilege to be called friends of His and to do His bidding.
d. Doing what He commands
i. There should be no qualms about obeying Jesus.
ii. He has more than proven Himself to be a trustworthy Lord and Saviour.
iii. Friendship with Jesus comes with responsibilities!
iv. Why should we be afraid of doing what He commands?
Let us take time to appreciate the friendship that the Lord Jesus offers to all believers!
