LAMENTATION OVER JERUSALEM

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate; and assuredly, I say to you, you shall not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’”

Luke 13:34-35

d. However, He warned that He would destroy the Temple and the city should the people forsake Him (2 Chronicles 7:19-22).

3. Words of Warning

a. Many prophets were sent to warn the kings of Israel.
b. But their words were not heeded fully.
c. Then came the solemn proclamation that the Temple and Jerusalem would be destroyed (Jeremiah 18-19).
d. Nobody heeded and Judah went into exile for 70 years (Jeremiah 25).

4. Jerusalem in the days of the Lord Jesus

a. The Lord knew the wretched and wicked history of Jerusalem that it had killed many prophets (Luke 13:34a).
b. He would have gathered the people to Himself graciously but they had rejected Him (Luke 13:34b).

5. What would happen to Jerusalem?

a. Jerusalem would be overrun by Rome.
b. Israel would be left desolate.
c. This occurred in AD 70 when Rome decided to destroy the Temple and all who had gathered in Jerusalem to defy Rome’s Legions.

6. The Future of Jerusalem

a. Their future depends on the Return of the Lord Jesus Christ.
b. “You shall not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’” Luke 13:35
