Text: Luke 14: 1-5

ACCEPTING AN INVITATION

1. The Lord Jesus was always kind and gracious:

a. To His Disciples.

b. To the Multitudes.

c. To the sick.

d. And even to His enemies.

2. He received an invitation to have a meal in the home of a Pharisee.

“Now it happened, as He went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath, that they watched Him closely. And behold, there was a certain man before Him who had dropsy. And Jesus, answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, ‘Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?’”

a. This was the home of one of the rulers of the Pharisees.

b. To have a meal on the Sabbath.

c. But the host and his friends were watching the Lord Jesus closely.

HEALING ON THE SABBATH

“And behold, there was a certain man before Him who had dropsy. And Jesus, answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, ‘Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?’”

Luke 14:2-3

1. The illness called “dropsy”.

a. This is an old term that describes a person with swelling of the limbs.

b. There is quite severe water retention problem.

2. The Lord Jesus was aware that He was being watched.

a. He was unafraid of this ruler of the Pharisees.

b. Nor of his friends who were at his home for the meal.

3. He raised a question to them.

a. “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” Luke 14:3

b. This was not a “trick question”.

c. It was a sincere question that required an answer.

THE SILENCE OF THE PHARISEES

“But they kept silent. And He took him and healed him, and let him go.”

Luke 14:4

1. The Pharisees did not reply the question the Lord Jesus raised to them.

2. The Lord Jesus healed the man there and then.

A FURTHER QUESTION

“Then He answered them, saying, ‘Which of you, having a donkey or an ox that has fallen into a pit, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?’ And they could not answer Him regarding these things.”

Luke 14:5-6

1. Would the Pharisees have rescued

a. A donkey that had fallen into a pit?

b. Or an ox that had fallen into a pit?

2. Would they not have immediately rescued the animal, even if it was on the Sabbath day?

3. The Pharisees again did not reply.

a. They would have rescued their animals.

b. That would be a natural thing to do.

4. Why would not the Lord Jesus heal the man suffering from dropsy on a Sabbath day?

法利赛人的沉默

“他们却不言语。耶稣就治好那人，叫他走了。”

2. 主耶稣就当场治好那人

另一个问题

“便对他们说：‘你们中间谁有驴或有牛在安息日掉在井里，不立时拉它上来呢？’他们不能对答这话。”

《路加福音 14：5-6》

1. 法利赛人是否会救

a. 掉在井里的驴？

b. 或掉在井里的牛？

2. 即使动物在安息日掉在井里，他们不立时拉它上来吗？

3. 法利赛人再次不回答

a. 他们必会把自己的牲畜救上来

b. 那是理所当然的

4. 主耶稣为何不会在安息日医治那患水臌的人？
