THE PHARISEES

1. Some of the Pharisees were openly hostile.

2. Many were hypocrites (Luke 11:37-54).

3. It is possible that some may have been inclined to have faith in the Lord Jesus.

A WORD OF WARNING FROM THE PHARISEES

“On that very day some Pharisees came, saying to Him, ‘Get out and depart from here, for Herod wants to kill You.’”

Luke 13:31

1. Who were these Pharisees?

a. These came to warn the Lord Jesus of Herod Antipas (He was the son of the infamous King Herod who ordered a massacre of infants; Matthew 2).
b. Why they came to warn him is not specifically stated:
i. Out of concern?
ii. Another way of threatening the Lord Jesus?

2. But the words of warning were very clear.

a. “Get out and depart from here”
i. Herod Antipas was a tetrarch.
ii. He ruled over Galilee and Peraea.
b. Herod Antipas wanted to kill the Lord Jesus.
c. He was the one who killed John the Baptiser.

“And He said to them, ‘Go, tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.’ Nevertheless I must journey today, tomorrow, and the day following; for it cannot be that a prophet should perish outside of Jerusalem.’”

Luke 13:32-33

THE LORD JESUS WAS UNPERTURBED

1. The Lord Jesus gave a brave and candid reply

a. He called Herod Antipas a “fox”.
b. Symbolic meaning:
i. One who is cunning.
ii. One who is insignificant unlike a lion.

2. The Ministry of the Lord Jesus

a. “I cast out demons”
b. “And perform cures”
c. Given such powers why would He be afraid of Herod Antipas?

3. Closing a Chapter of Ministry

a. Today
b. Tomorrow
c. On the third day I shall be perfected.
i. The word “perfected” is a reference to the completion of His work.
ii. The meaning is “soon!”

4. On to Jerusalem

a. It would be at Jerusalem where the Lord would meet His death.
b. He would not perish at the hands of Herod Antipas.
c. An old saying was cited.

“For it cannot be that a prophet should perish outside of Jerusalem”

Luke 13:33

Traditionally, Jerusalem has killed all the prophets of God!

a. 今天

b. 明天
