MEDITATION
Exodus 23:19
19 The first of the firstfruits of your land you shall bring into the house of the LORD your God. You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Firstfruits offering
a. This word was a reminder.
b. Worship was something that needed to be learned.
2. Why was there this emphasis?
a. The human heart tends to be carnal.
b. Some common problems associated with the human heart:
i. It can become distracted.
ii. It can lose its focus.
iii. It can lose faith easily.
iv. It can give way to unbelief.
v. It can end up becoming disobedient.
c. This reminder was given:
i. To strengthen faith.
ii. To develop a needed relationship with God through worship.
iii. To encourage a deep sense of hope and trust in God.
iv. To believe that God will bless with a full harvest.
v. No one should begrudge giving the firstfruits to God in worship.
vi. Every act of faith would result in a stronger relationship with God.
3. A good regard for animals
a. Animals may not be human beings.
b. But they still deserve respect and good regard.
c. Boiling a young goat:
i. Some may prefer to have boiled goat’s meat for consumption.
ii. Others may prefer the meat roasted.
iii. The preference is personal and valid.
d. What is not allowed:
i. To boil the young of a goat in his mother’ milk.
ii. Technically, it may seem that this is a matter of cooking.
iii. But the challenge is to be gentle and sensitive.
iv. A mother has just lost her kid to be consumed for food.
v. There must have been some sense of loss.
vi. There is sensitivity shown to the mother goat when one does not use her milk to cook the flesh of the young goat!
