"Everyone deals falsely"

Text: Jeremiah 8:10

A REPEATED WORD OF WARNING

There were severe and grave consequences to the sinful activities of the children of Judah. These consequences had been forewarned. This was repeated once again.

“Therefore I will give their wives to others,
And their fields to those who will inherit them;
Because from the least even to the greatest
Everyone is given to covetousness;
From the prophet even to the priest
Everyone deals falsely.
For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of My people slightly,
Saying, ‘Peace, peace!’
When there is no peace.”
Jeremiah 8:10-11

1. “Therefore I will give their wives to others, and their fields to those who will inherit them”

a) Wives (the womenfolk) would become the property of the invaders.
i) They would be violated.
ii) They would become slaves.
iii) This was mentioned earlier (Jeremiah 6:12).
b) Fields (property)
i) They would be seized by the enemies.
ii) This was also mentioned earlier (Jeremiah 6:12).

2. “Because from the least even to the greatest everyone is given to covetousness”

a) The sin of covetousness.
b) Everyone was caught up with this sin (Jeremiah 6:13).
i) The greatest (those who were already “rich and successful”)
ii) The least (Those who were poor and struggling)
iii) It is not wrong to try and improve one’s lot; but not out of covetousness.

3. “From the prophet even to the priest everyone deals falsely.
For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of My people slightly,
Saying, ‘Peace, peace!’ When there is no peace.”

a) Dealing falsely:
i) The temple priests
ii) The itinerant prophets
b) These were supposed to be:
i) Proclaiming truth
ii) They dealt in falsehood instead.
c) Their message of peace:
i) This was false.
ii) The enemies were already so close by.
iii) This problem had already been cited (Jeremiah 6:14).
