INTRODUCTION

Overcoming a negative spirit

Let us be challenged as we commence our reading of the Book of Jeremiah. Many of us do not really like lengthy works. Reading a big and difficult book almost seems daunting! Let us overcome this negative spirit!

An important book

Let us read the Book of Jeremiah because it contains significant and relevant teachings.

1. Personal glimpses of the personal life of the prophet Jeremiah

a) The Calling of Jeremiah when he was but a young man who felt that he was not equal to the task that he was given.
b) Tender glimpses of his personal life may be found in the Book of Jeremiah.
i) He was not just a holy prophet removed from the masses.
ii) He was so very human struggling with fears and tears.
c) Many vital Revelations were given to Jeremiah personally so that he could give timely words to Judah as the nation faced an invasion from the fierce Babylonians.
d) The relationship between God and the prophet Jeremiah is truly both sobering and heart-warming at the same time.

2. Prophecy fulfilled

a) Many of the prophetic books warned of God’s judgement.
b) The Book of Jeremiah warned of judgment too.
c) Jeremiah went on to record the fulfilment of some of those prophecies.
d) He was an eyewitness of the Fall of Jerusalem and of the end of the kingdom of Judah.

3. The Problem of Sin

a) Jeremiah was instructed by God about the deadly nature of Sin.
b) He struggled with God’s word on this subject.
c) He discovered that God was right in His assessment of sin’s deadliness.

4. Positive lessons of Mercy and Hope

a) God had to judge Sin.
b) But He also gave a powerful Word of Hope.
c) God would give a New Covenant to His people.
