"They have rejected the word of the LORD"

Text: Jeremiah 8:9

THE DANGER OF REJECTING GOD’S WORD

There are those who reject the Word of God outright. But there are those who appear to have received His word, but had in fact rejected it! This problem had to be addressed!

“Even the stork in the heavens
Knows her appointed times;
And the turtledove, the swift, and the swallow
Observe the time of their coming.
But My people do not know the judgment of the LORD.
How can you say, ‘We are wise,
And the law of the LORD is with us’?
Look, the false pen of the scribe certainly works falsehood.
The wise men are ashamed,
They are dismayed and taken.
Behold, they have rejected the word of the LORD;
So what wisdom do they have?”
Jeremiah 8:7-9

1. Understanding the “appointed times”

a) An illustration was given about migratory birds.
i) The stork, the turtledove, the swift and the swallow.
ii) They know that they must fly away before the cold winter comes.
iii) If they do not take heed, they would die of starvation.
b) The children of Judah, God’s people.
i) They do not know that a dark and cold winter was coming upon them.
ii) The judgment of the LORD was near at hand.
iii) But nobody seemed to be aware of this!

2. “How can you say, ‘We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us’?
Look, the false pen of the scribe certainly works falsehood.”

a) Many claimed wisdom.
b) The scribes claimed that the law of God was with them.
c) But the reality was quite different.
i) The pen of the scribe wrote wrong things.
ii) They were teaching error.
iii) They may seem to have the law of God.
iv) The reality was that they did not fully comprehend His word.
v) In choosing error, they showed that they did not possess wisdom.

3. “The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken.
Behold, they have rejected the word of the LORD; so what wisdom do they have?”

a) The wisemen were ashamed when confronted with their error.
b) They were mistaken.
c) They were taken (captured).
d) What actually happened?
i) They had subtly rejected the word of the LORD.
ii) Their human wisdom had supplanted God’s word.
e) They claim to possess wisdom.
i) This was proven to be false.
ii) “What wisdom do they have?”
iii) The migratory birds had more wisdom than the scribes and wise men!
