"The time of her harvest will come"

Text: Jeremiah 51:33

A TYPICAL TESTIMONY AGAINST BABYLON

Many nations would bear testimony against Babylon. The following testimony would really be a typical one, but it was especially true with reference to Judah.

“For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel:
‘The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor
When it is time to thresh her;
Yet a little while
And the time of her harvest will come.
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon
Has devoured me, he has crushed me;
He has made me an empty vessel,
He has swallowed me up like a monster;
He has filled his stomach with my delicacies,
He has spit me out.'”
Jeremiah 51:33-34

1. “For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel:
‘The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor when it is time to thresh her;
yet a little while and the time of her harvest will come.'”

He is also the God of Israel.

b) Assurance of judgment against Babylon is given:

i) Judgment is compared to a threshing floor.

ii) The imagery is that of harvest time.

iii) The grain would be thoroughly threshed.

iv) The kernel and the chaff would be separated.

c) Israel is assured that the judgment of Babylon would not be glossed over.
The judgment would be thorough and fair.

2. “Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me, he has crushed me;
he has made me an empty vessel, he has swallowed me up like a monster;
he has filled his stomach with my delicacies, he has spit me out”

a) This was a complain that Judah would bring up against Babylon.

b) These details would be brought to God as the supreme Judge:

i) Crushing of Judah.

ii) Devouring the nation.

iii) Judah becomes an empty vessel.

iv) Babylon is compared to a greedy monster.

v) He has devoured Judah’s delicacies only to spit everything out.
