"Hear the counsel of the LORD"
Text: Jeremiah 49:20
GOD’S COUNSEL AGAINST EDOM
God had purposed that He would cause Edom to be destroyed. This counsel was made known to Jeremiah!
“Therefore hear the counsel of the LORD that He has taken against Edom,
And His purposes that He has proposed against the inhabitants of Teman:
Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out;
Surely He shall make their dwelling places desolate with them.
The earth shakes at the noise of their fall;
At the cry its noise is heard at the Red Sea.
Behold, He shall come up and fly like the eagle,
And spread His wings over Bozrah;
The heart of the mighty men of Edom in that day shall be
Like the heart of a woman in birth pangs.”
Jeremiah 49:20-22
1. “Therefore hear the counsel of the LORD that He has taken against Edom,
and His purposes that He has proposed against the inhabitants of Teman:
surely the least of the flock shall draw them out;
surely He shall make their dwelling places desolate with them”
a) “The counsel of the LORD”
i) This was a decree that God had made.
ii) It was a judgment that would be carried out against Edom.
b) The purpose of this Counsel was declared.
i) It would affect Teman.
ii) It was a city in the south of Edom.
iii) This city was named in honour of the grandson of Esau.
c) The dwelling places of the inhabitants would become desolate.
2. “The earth shakes at the noise of their fall;
at the cry its noise is heard at the Red Sea”
a) The fall of Edom would be heard by people far and wide.
b) The cry of Edom’s destruction would be heard at the Red Sea.
3. “Behold, He shall come up and fly like the eagle, and spread His wings over Bozrah;
the heart of the mighty men of Edom in that day
shall be like the heart of a woman in birth pangs”
a) God is likened to a mighty eagle.
b) The wings will spread over the fortress of Bozrah.
c) The mighty men of Edom would be like women at the time of their delivery
i) Weak
ii) In pain
iii) Fearful
