"Edom also shall be an astonishment"

Text: Jeremiah 49:17

THE COMPLETE OVERTHROWING OF EDOM

Battles may be won or lost. Edom had won some battles, but had also suffered defeats! But no one could foresee the complete destruction of Edom as a nation!

“‘Edom also shall be an astonishment;
Everyone who goes by it will be astonished
And will hiss at all its plagues.
As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah
And their neighbours,’ says the LORD,
‘No one shall remain there,
Nor shall a son of man dwell in it.'”
Jeremiah 49:17-18

1. “Edom also shall be an astonishment;
everyone who goes by it will be astonished and will hiss at all its plagues”

a) This was a fateful prophecy.

b) This prophetic word would astonish:

i) Edom and all its inhabitants.

ii) Neighbouring countries.

iii) Those who have heard of Edom’s might in the past.

c) The attitude of non-Edomites:

i) They will “hiss at all its plagues”.

ii) They will deride Edom.

iii) Edom made many enemies because of their arrogant and belligerent ways.

2. “‘As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbours,’ says the LORD,
‘No one shall remain there, nor shall a son of man dwell in it'”

a) Sodom and Gomorrah were rich cities once.

i) They were both corrupt and arrogant in their ways.

ii) They were thoroughly overthrown by the LORD.

iii) Surrounding cities that were supporting them were also destroyed.

b) In the same manner:

i) Edom would be overthrown completely.

ii) There would be no inhabitants left in Edom’s cities.

iii) Such would be the solemn fate of Edom.
