"For they all shall know Me"
Text: Jeremiah 31:34
KNOWING GOD
The LORD desired all to know Him personally as their God. The teaching ministry of ancient Israel was not great at all! The LORD revealed that He would ensure that spiritual knowledge was available freely to all!
“No more shall every man teach his neighbour,
and every man his brother, saying,
‘Know the LORD,’
for they all shall know Me,
from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD.
For I will forgive their iniquity,
and their sin I will remember no more.”
Jeremiah 31:34
1. “No more shall every man teach his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD'”
a) On the surface, the teaching program looks good.
i) Every man teaching his neighbour.
ii) Every man teaching his brother.
b) The subject: “Know the LORD”.
c) The problem:
i) Defective knowledge.
ii) Deadly false teaching.
iii) Poorly equipped teachers.
d) Because of the poor teaching program Israel had broken God’s Sinaitic Covenant
again and again!
2. “For they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD”
a) God desired ALL to know Him.
b) This was not the case in ancient Israel.
i) The poor were neglected.
ii) The oppressed did not know how to apply faith in the Lord.
c) The LORD would change many things in the New Covenant.
d) The least of the people can know God as well as the greatest of the people.
3. “For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more”
a) The Law of God had been poorly taught.
b) In the hands of wicked rulers, the Law was most unforgiving.
c) In the New Covenant, the LORD will extend forgiveness to all who were truly repentant.
GLIMPSES OF THE NEW COVENANT MINISTRY
1. The Lord Jesus Himself ushered in the New Covenant.
2. He chose very humble people, like fishermen, and equipped them to become mighty Apostles. In the Old Covenant, this would have been unthinkable!
3. The forgiveness of sins was extended to people like Matthew, a tax collector. He was appointed an Apostle too. In the Old Covenant, this would not have been possible.
