"I will make a new covenant"

Text: Jeremiah 31:31

A NEW COVENANT

This was an even more uplifting word from the LORD to the Returnees who would become the new nation. The new Israel would also be given a new covenant!

“Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD,
when I will make a new covenant
with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—”
Jeremiah 31:31

1. “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD”

a) This would be a reference to the future.

b) The Concept would involve a Promise and a Fulfilment.

2. “When I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—”

a) This would be called “a new covenant”.

b) It would involve:

i) The house of Israel.

ii) It would involve the house of Judah.

THE BACKGROUND TO THIS CONCEPT

The new covenant was already prophesied by Isaiah the prophet.

1. The first statement

“I, the LORD, have called You in righteousness,
And will hold Your hand;
I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people,
As a light to the Gentiles.”
Isaiah 42:6

2. The second statement

“Thus says the LORD:
‘In an acceptable time I have heard You,
And in the day of salvation I have helped You;
I will preserve You and give You
As a covenant to the people,
To restore the earth,
To cause them to inherit the desolate heritages'”
Isaiah 49:8

3. Significance of this new covenant.

a) The Messiah Himself would be the Covenant.

b) He would bring this Promise of the new covenant to pass.

4. The fulfilment of this new covenant was declared by the Lord Jesus Christ

“And as they were eating, Jesus took bread,
blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said,
‘Take, eat; this is My body.’
Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying,
‘Drink from it, all of you.
For this is My blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for many for the remission of sins.'”
Matthew 26:26-28
