It Is Written
"That you might know that the LORD Himself is God..."
Text: Deuteronomy 4:35
A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
How privileged the children of God were to have been given a special covenant-relationship with the Lord! But we are no less privileged to have a new covenant relationship with God in the new covenant given through the Lord Jesus Christ (Matthew 26:28).
HIGHLIGHTING THIS SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP
Moses highlighted the significance of Israel’s relationship with the LORD God.
“Did any people ever hear the voice of God speaking out
of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and lived?
Or did God ever try to go and take for Himself a nation
from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs,
by wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm,
and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God
did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
To you it was shown, that you might know that
the LORD Himself is God; there is none other besides Him.”
Deuteronomy 4:33-35
1. Two rhetorical questions were raised
a) “Did any people ever hear the voice of God… as you have heard, and lived?”
b) “Or did God ever try to go and take for Himself a nation… according to all that the LORD your God did?”
c) Rhetorical questions are a literary device.
i) The answers are so obvious they are not stated.
ii) The point of using rhetorical questions was to emphasize the significance of the covenant-relationship Israel had with God.
2. “To you it was shown, that you might know that the LORD Himself is God; there is none other besides Him”
a) It is not easy to actually and truly believe in God.
b) Israel needed to learn and establish this as a fundamental truth.
c) The LORD Himself is God!
d) There is none like Him!
A TRUTH THAT NEEDS TO BE LEARNED WELL
Israel took a long time to learn this foundational truth!
