"And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach..."

Text: Deuteronomy 4:14

THE SEQUEL

The sequel must be given full consideration. Moses wrote this most carefully.

“And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments,
that you might observe them in the land which you cross over to possess.”
Deuteronomy 4:14

1. “And the LORD commanded me”

a) As much as God gave His Ten Commandments personally
i) In oral form
ii) In written form
b) He also gave a clear commandment to Moses to teach the children of Israel.

2. “To teach you statutes and judgments”

a) Teaching of the Lord’s word was a commandment from God Himself.
b) Learning of the Commandments of the Lord must also be taken most seriously.

3. “Statutes”

a) The Ten Commandments only formed the Core of all God’s laws.
b) Statutes must also be given and taught.
i) This will form the judicial code of the nation.
ii) They will also govern the religious life of Israel.
iii) The Statutes would govern the civil and social life of the children of Israel.

4. “Judgments”

a) There will be times when exceptional circumstances may occur.
b) The laws existing may have to be interpreted and applied to fit those circumstances.
c) The law would have to undergo a number of things: –
i) The Ten Commandments would have to be examined in great depth.
ii) Wisdom from God must be carefully sought.
iii) All the statutes must also be studied and brought to bear.
iv) The Judiciary must then come up with “judgments” concerning the special cases.
v) These would in time come to be called “Statutes and Judgments”.
