"You have need of endurance..."

Text: Hebrews 10:36

CONFIDENCE AND ENDURANCE

Two important virtues must be carefully cultivated! When cultivated well, they will stand the believer in good stead. Confidence had already been mentioned. The second virtue is described in the following text.

“For you have need of endurance,
so that after you have done the will of God,
you may receive the promise.”
Hebrews 10:36

1. “For you have need of endurance”

a) This was a frank and forthright observation.
i) The lack of confidence was mentioned.
ii) The lack of endurance was now pointed out.
b) The need of endurance emphasized.
i) The responsibility of cultivating endurance belonged to the believer.
ii) This must be clearly understood.

2. What is endurance?

a) It involves “doing the will of God”.
i) But doing the will of God is not just doing a good deed now and then.
ii) It is not losing confidence in continuing doing good deeds.
b) It involves the part that is described as “after you have done the will of God”.
i) Endurance is being able to find continued confidence in the Lord.
ii) Endurance is being able to hold fast to the Lord amidst tough times.

3. “You may receive the promise”

a) The believer knows and believes in the promise(s) of God.
b) Endurance is holding fast to the promise(s) of God; believing that there would indeed be “great reward” to the believer who has confidence and endurance.
