"He who is coming will come..."

Text: Hebrews 10:37

PRECIOUS PROMISES

There are many promises given to the believer! Each and every promise from the Lord is indeed precious (Cf. 2 Peter 1:4). These promises were given by the Lord for several reasons. Three may be highlighted:-

1. To comfort the heart of the believer.

2. To strengthen the faith of the believer.

3. To build up confidence and endurance in the believer.

A VERY SPECIAL PROMISE

One of the most precious of promises may be found in the following text.

“For yet a little while, and He who is coming will come
and will not tarry.”
Hebrews 10:37

This promise has to do with the Return of the Lord Jesus Christ for His saints! While it is one of the most precious, this promise is arguably one of the hardest to fathom.

1. For yet a little while

a) This promise involves the concept of time.
b) Two different perspectives may be highlighted:
i) The human standpoint
Time is measured in terms of life-spans. We have a very finite comprehension of how time really works. To many believers, the return of the Lord Jesus seems to take such a long time!
ii) The Divine standpoint
To the Lord it is only “a little while”. Thousands of years to an eternal God is truly “a little while”. (Cf. 2 Peter 3)

2. And He who is coming will come and will not tarry

a) The Lord Jesus will keep His word about coming back for His saints.
b) He will not tarry (He is not procrastinating).
c) Endurance is being able to hold fast to this precious promise of the Lord.
