"A certain fearful expectation of judgment..."

Text: Hebrews 10:27

RAISING UP THE ISSUE OF JUDGMENT

The author of Hebrews was absolutely serious about the problem of deliberate or willful sinning! He appended the idea of judgment to the problem of willful sinning.

“But a certain fearful expectation of judgment,
and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.
Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy
on the testimony of two or three witnesses.”
Hebrews 10:27-28

1. A certain fearful expectation of judgment

a) Every word is carefully chosen:-
i) “Certain”
This word removes any “doubt” about judgment!
ii) “Fearful”
There is every reason to fear the judgment of God!
iii) “Expectation”
The judgment may not fall immediately, but it would come eventually.
iv) “Judgment”
This would be God pronouncing a verdict on all who have rejected His word!

2. And fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries

a) Fiery indignation well describes how God looks at those who reject His word willfully.
b) Devour the adversaries:-
i) The word “adversaries” may be understood as “enemies in opposition”.
ii) The people who rejected the truth of what Jesus had accomplished through His sacrifice are considered “adversaries”.
iii) They would be “devoured” (“destroyed”).

3. Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy

This was the practice of Mosaic law. This was well-known. The danger of rejecting the word of God cannot be taken lightly. The forsaking of the assembly of believers is a serious sin problem that has dire consequences. May the thought of certain judgment cause us to “fear the Lord”!
