"If we sin willfully..."

Text: Hebrews 10:26a

THE DEADLINESS OF SIN

The author minces no words whenever he dealt with the problem of sin! In the following text he addresses the problem of deliberate sin.

“For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge
of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins.”
Hebrews 10:26

1. For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth

a) What is this “knowledge of the truth”?
i) In context this would be knowledge of the fact that we can enter into the Holiest through the blood of Christ.
ii) This truth is truly awesome.
iii) A whole new vista of knowledge has been opened up.
b) What is the reference to “sinning willfully”?
i) The heart of the believer should be wonderfully stirred up to draw closer to God!
ii) Being able to gain entrance into the Holy of Holies should be given full and due consideration.
iii) If anyone disdains this knowledge, expressing it by forsaking worship and fellowship, the individual is in grave danger of sinning willfully.

2. There no longer remains a sacrifice for sins

a) A sacrifice would be necessary for the atoning of our sins.
b) Christ paid the ultimate sacrifice for our sins.
c) Through His sacrifice He has made possible for all believers to enter into The Holiest.
d) This truth must not be taken lightly. To spurn this truth and its ramifications would be deliberate sin.
e) The solemnity of the statement “no longer remains a sacrifice for sins” must be given careful thought!
