"Of how much worse punishment..."

Text: Hebrews 10:29

THE GRAVEST SIN

If you were asked what the gravest sin is, what would your answer be? Would it be “murder”? Grave as that may be, the following text may well suggest the gravest sin!

“Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose,
will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God
underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was
sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?”
Hebrews 10:29

1. Of how much worse punishment… will he be thought worthy

a) There is no question about the rightness of meting out punishment.
b) The issue of how much worse punishment was left unanswered is for good reason.
c) The sin is so grave that the punishment cannot even be fully contemplated.

2. A sin that has many connected component parts

It is difficult to imagine the following actions actually taking place! The author of Hebrews sought to describe the horrendous nature of this sin in the following way!

a) Trampled the Son of God underfoot
i) This is an act of spurning the Son of God.
ii) This is an act of despising the Lord Jesus in the worse possible way.
b) Counted the blood of the Covenant… a common thing
i) By the blood of Jesus the New Covenant is sealed and established.
ii) By the New Covenant we have access to The Holiest.
iii) Treating this truth as “a common thing” is nothing less than contempt of Jesus and His sacrifice.
c) Insulted the Spirit of grace
i) The Holy Spirit Himself is the witness of the significance of the blood of Christ shed for sinners.
ii) To spurn Jesus and all He had done would be to insult the Holy Spirit!
